Curl Case Study # 1:

A natural hair journey without oils, and butters…!

So I have been curls deep into the Cut it Kinky Digital Mastermind. I am in a network with other curly stylists and artists from all over the world. I’t always been my heart’s desire to cater to natural hair. I have been graced to be able to do just that. Once I was faced with the lack of tight curl education, and the lack of products that actually made a difference in the tight curls, I sought out education. In this industry, we often lack the resources to invest in education beyond hair school.

I have decided to ditch the oils and butters and rock my curls. I wanted to dive deep into this journey so that I can share my progress with you guys. I detoxed my curls after a 2 day old blowout. I cleansed with AGHair Boost and then followed up with Innersense’s Pure Harmony Hairbath and Daily Inspirations conditioner. I set my hair with 3 products and here I am on day 8 and it is time to give my curls a fresh hydration and defining set. This is not the point of the post. I wanted to share my curl case study with you guys!

One of my good girlfriend’s committed to this new curl journey with me. I have been documenting her journey of washing weekly and not using any products outside of the ones we use at the salon. I am quite amazed at how her hair is responding. Check out her progress to rehydration below.

Tanisha, decided that she wanted change. I asked her if she would consider doing a curl hydration case study with me. She agreed. We cut her curls into a tight taper. Pictured below is her first Curl Experience. Please excuse the bottom right blurred picture, we had such a fun visit that we could not sit still at first :). Prior to Tanisha’s first visit she detoxed from butters and oils. She had taken her hair down from spring twists maybe 12 days prior. Her hair responded well to being hydrated and defined. I am noticing that with each set, the process to define her curls it becomes quicker. Her sets are also lasting longer too. Her last set lasted over 10 days before we reset her hair.

It is important to continue your education in the beauty industry. Being a curl specialist can be challenging. I am challenging all of the women who desire to wear their curls to ditch the butters and oils and opt for hydrating products and more simple regimens.

What I noticed from her initial visit to now is how her hair responds to water. The water used to bead up on her hair and roll off of it. The oil had created a barrier between her hair strands and water. I hear so many women complaining about dry hair. So far in this case study, I feel like majority of the issue with hydration and moisture retention is the lack of hair washing. I truly believe that we should be washing our more often and using better quality products. Another thing I learned in this process is that the hair is really wet when applying products and that you are working the product in from the root to the end. When styling hair, it is important that the hair is laid in the position that it will be worn and styled in. There were quite a few aha moments and many more to come as we continue this process. Tanisha’s hair is definitely more elongated and defined in her last hydrate and define set. Hydrated hair takes longer to frizz :)
